Growth and eco-physiology of shorea species in a planted forest

The dipterocarp forests are fast disappearing and the rest available for harvesting are lack of high-valued timber and in degraded condition. Reforestation could bring back these forests. The objectives of this study were to determine diameter growth rate of Shorea species of 18 year-old stand established in a rehabilitated project and determine the factors influencing the growth. Diameter growth rate was higher in Shorea dasyphylla, followed by Shorea leprosula and Shorea ovata. The growth rate was influenced by photosynthetic rate and leaf area index. Shorea dasyphylla and S. leprosula are suitable for open planting while S. ovata needs shade for better growing.
