Performance of MPOB population 12 at SPAD

Sarawak Plantation Agriculture Development Sdn. Bhd evaluated the second generation Nigerian Population 12 progenies received from MPOB in Ladang Surea,Miri. Performance of Population 12 progenies in this agro-ecological conditions appear acceptable for traits such as ffb and bunch number whereas the fruit to bunch ratio and percentage of oil to bunch have been affected largely by the high rainfall in this location and high bunch number of this oil palm breeding material. Short stature palms derived from intra-Population 12 could be developed and tested at higher densities especially in peat soil areas as the Leaf area index of the progenies is much below the optimum LA! between 5 and 6 to maximize yield Further inter-crossing with other BPROs has to be carried out and evaluated in a number of locations to assess the adaptability of this type of oil palm planting material derived from selected Nig. Pop 12 parents and AVROS, Yangambi and Deli Dura in Sarawak's diverse environmental conditions. Improvements of fruit traits of high I V. parent palms are required before any planting material could be commercialized. Selected ortets can be cloned and tested on a semi-commercial scale.
