Oil Palm Biomass (OPB) consists of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The three chemical components are excellent source of dietary fiber which plays an important role in maintaining good health. Dietary fiber produced from OPB could have a wide range of applications in food formulation where fiber might usually be added such as breads and high fiber supplement. Cedar Food Industries Sdn. Bhd. has produced two commercial products enriched with OPB dietary fiber namely BiD-Fiber Plus and High Fiber Flour. Xylitol and oligosaccharides are currently produced from plant biomass with high hemicellulose content like birch wood and corncob. However, a compatible yield of oligosaccharide could be obtained from OPB by treating it with steam above 120°C. A higher yield of xylitol and oligosaccharide could also be achieved by wholly using parenchymatous tissue for the fine chemicals production as the parenchyma cells has higher hemicellulose fraction as compared to fiber bundles. Cedar Food Industries Sdn Bhd. is collaborating with its foreign counterpart to produce the two fine chemicals using Oil Palm Biomass.
