Environmental factors such as climatic and soil are known to have influenced on crop growth and yield. In the tropics, solar radiation would be one of the major climatic factors affecting grain production. This fact is due to a strong correlation of light intensity to crop productivity via photosynthesis. This study was conducted to evaluate the light harvesting potential on a local rice variety of MR 219 grown under field conditions. Experiments were conducted in the farmers plot located in ew the Northwest Selangor Integrated Development Project (PBLS). Parameters included in this study are evaluation of physiological characteristics such as gas exchange and growth performances measured at two critical growth stages; namely, vegetative (D-35) and reproductive (D-75). Data were analyzed by statistical software such as SAS program (Statistical Analysis System) and Minitab. Results showed that the gas exchange capacities and growth performances are higher on reproductive stages. MR 219 had a higher net photosynthesis, quantum yield, maximum assimilation, leaf area index, chlorophyll content and light use efficiency on D-75 than D-35.
