Herbage production and utilization, and milk production per unit area under set stocking and rotational grazing by lactating dairy cows

The effect of set stocking (S) and rotational grazing (R) by lactating dairy cows on herbage production and utilization, and milk production from pasture were determined under time-restricted grazing (5 hours/day) and the same stocking rate (6 cows/ha). Annual mean grass height (cm) was lower in S than R (9.7 vs. 12.6). However, mean herbage mass (Tdm/ha) throughout the grazing period was similar to both groups 0.6) since annual mean tiller density (No./ m2) in S was higher than in R (6,662 vs. 5,214). Because daily regrowth rate of herbage mass in S was higher than in R, total amount of herbage production (tDM/ha) including herbage growth before grazing was higher in S than R 02.1 vs. 10.3). Annual herbage utilization (tDM/ha) and milk production from pasture (t/ha) were higher in S than R (herbage, 11.2 vs. 7.0; milk, 9.1 vs. 6.7).
