The response of the tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon, to Corexit 9527 in the laboratory varied according to their age. Generally the older the shrimp the greater their hardiness but the relationship between the two is not entirely linear. The acute toxicities (LC50) at days 30, 38, 49, 60, 71, 84 and 98 are estimated to be about 54, 33, 71, 54, 137, 110 and 199 mg/L respectively, showing a series of periodic dips in their response. The drop in acute toxicity (LC50 at day 4) between the two adjacent moulting stages is about 30%. The cause of this is discussed in light of the approximation of the average ratios (1.14) of succeeding shrimp stages used in the testing experiment which is similar to that of various moulting stages of an arthropod. The surviving shrimps after day 4 were transferred to containers with freshly prepared seawater and reared with feeding for another 7 days. The number of shrimps which survived during this recovery period was not significantly different (p greater than 0.01) from the number which survived after day 4 implying the acceptability of the testing protocol of the acute toxicity.
