Effect of different light intensitites on growth, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic performance and morphology of Sargassum sp.

Five batches of Sargassum sp. (each batch containing 10 replicates) were cultured for five weeks under fluorescence lamps at different light intensities viz. 25 muEms, 55 muEms, 70 muEms, 80 muEms and 110 muEms. The cultures were subjected to a 10 hours light and 14 hours darkness (10L,14D) daily regiment. The study revealed that the growth of Sargassum sp. is highest at a light intensity of 110 muEms but ceased after the fourth week of culture. At a medium range of light intensity (55 muEms to 80 muEms) growth was slower but continued until the fifth week. The slower growth rate was obtained at a light intensity of 25 muEms. Despite the higher growth rate under high light intensity, the contents of chlorophyll a and c was found to be reduced. The result also showed that the highest photosynthetic rate was at high light intensity. Treatment of culture under different strengths of light intensity resulted in changes in the morphology of Sargassum sp. Increasing the light intensity caused the colour of the lamina to change from brown to pale yellow accompanied by a reduction in the width and length of the lamina. In additiion, there was an increase in the number of air bladders in cultures of light intensities of 70 muEms, 80 muEms and 110 muEms.
