Monitoring the quality of environment using statistical quality control procedures
2003
Michael, K.B.C.
The use of Statistical Quality Control procedures to monitor the quality of environment such as air and water is studied. Control charts for the average X and range R can be used to monitor the level of carbon monoxide or nitrogen oxide in the air. Carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide are toxic gases produced by fuel burning appliance such as automobiles. Carbon monoxide poisoning is harmful to human beings and may even cause deaths. Access nitrogen oxide on the other hand may lead to global warming. Similarly, the level of dissolved oxygen in water can be monitored with X and R charts. Dissolved oxygen in water refers to the oxygen that is contained in water. It is important for the survival of aquatic life such as fishes. Processed waste discharged by industrial plants may lower the level of dissolved oxygen in water. A low level of dissolved oxygen in water is harmful and causes environmental stress to aquatic life. In addition, process capability analysis can also be used to determine the degree of conformance of environmental level to government standards.
