Restricted rooting volumes affect shoot and root growth in starfruit and subsequently reduce plant growth. Plant height, internode number and leaf area reduced significantly when rooting volumes reduced from 22.5 to 7.5-litre by 60%, 25% and 191 %, respectively. Root surface area and total root length reduced, however root length density increased and coincided with decline in leaf water potential to -1.4 MPa. Root elongation rate (RER) was 739, 840 and997.3 cm per week in 7.5, 15.0 and 22.5-litre, respectively. Root restriction caused reduction in root diameter and increase root suberisation. In the absence of dwarfing rootstocks, root confinement can become effective tool to control plant growth, increase plant density and improve plant efficiency.
