Enhanced degradation of endosulfan: a prospective remedial method for endosulfan-contaminated soils

Endosulfan, as Thiodan 35 EC (32.9% w/w) was applied at weekly (TI), fortnightly (T2), monthly (T3) and bimonthly (T4) intervals and the frequency of application was 30, 15, 8 and 4 for TI, T2, T3 and T4 respectively. The degradation rates of endosulfan increased with increasing application frequency. Degradation rates of 0.63 (TI), 0.28 (T2), 0.16 (T3) and 0.09 (T4) mg/kg/day were observed at 209 days after first application. The occurrence of enhanced degradation in endosulfan may serve as a blue-print for future research on the isolation, identification and utilization of soil microorganisms for remedial purposes in endosulfan-contaminated soils.
