Effect of glucose concentrations on growth and storage carbohydrate in oil palm cultures.

Oil palm cultures respond to external factors such as high osmoticum. It was observed that a high concentration of glucose(10 % to 15% w /v) were able to reduce the growth rate of polyembryogenic (PE) cultures and thus could prolong the subculture intervals. High concentration of glucose also induced formation of terminal inflorecsences (TI) and rigid shoots in some of the sensitive clones. It was also found that high glucose concentrations induced accumulation of ethanol soluble sugars, hydrolysable sugars and fructans in embryoids and in vitro shoot tissue. The moisture content of these treated cultures were reduced, which indicated moisture stress. This correlation between glucose concentrations and accumulation of storage carbohydrate could be exploited to improve the understanding of stress tolerance in oil palm cultures.
