The development of seed quality in soybean in two contrasting agro-ecological condition

Changes in soybean seed quality of cultivar Wilis During development and maturation in the dry season (August-November 2001) were compared with those in the wet season (December 2001-March 2002). Under field condition the duration from planting to stage R7 only differed by two days between the two seasons. Maximum dry weight, which indicates physiological maturity, was attained at stage R7 + five days in both the environments. The moisture content at physiological maturity was higher in wet season. The ability to germinate normally was low initially and attained maximum values after physiological maturity. Longevity continued to increase during development with maximum at stage R7 + 10 days (56 and %8 DAA in dry and wet season, respectively). Potential longevity of seeds harvested from the dry season was higher than those from the wet season. The results contradict the hyphothesis that maximum seed quality coincides with physiological maturity, rather than maximum seed quality was attained five days after physiological maturity.
