Growth limitations under rubber agroforestry system: a case study with mengkudu

Comparative studies on growth and physiological characteristics of mengkudu trees growing in different ecosystems (monoculture and intercrop) as well as relative growth perfomance within alley cropping where mengkudu as a companion crop was grown under different growth irradiance were investigated. Growth and physiological comparison were made at foliage and tree levels. Mengkudu is generally a sun loving species, however, the species can tolerate shade through physiological and morphological acclimation of leaves. In contrasts to high growth irradiance, low growth irradiance may cause slight reduction in leaf expansion rate, specific leaf weight and chlorophyll concentration. Photochemical activity however was not affected by growth irradiance. These reductions and changes may limit biomass production, which may affect yield.
