Estimating the non-timber values of forest : natural stands of rattan and bamboos.

Non-timber values (NTV) play an important role to rural communities and the economy at large. It is argued that for better land use decision making, evaluation of the values of these goods and services could help in ascertaining the trade off involved when logging and forest conversion are favoured over biodiversity conservation of the tropical forest. An application of a valuation technique on appraising NTVs, rattan and bamboo, is illustrated. The value of rattan stands in permanent reserved forest is estimated using the residual value approach. This approach is commonly adopted in appraising timber stands. The value of a clump of rattan and bamboo is influenced by the price of the rattan and bamboos that can be potentially extracted and the grade and number or length of potential marketable rattan stick and bamboo culs available per clump. The economic value of the potential culms is dependent on the prifitability of the extraction and processing. The economic value of rattan and bamboo are high, if the number of sticks and culms potentially available per clump is high. This paper provides a comparison of the economic value reserves. Policy implication of the study is also provided.
