Biological control of insect pests using cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus
1995
C.F.J. Bong
Cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (CPV) is an entomopathogen which has a very wide host range. It usually attacks the insect midgut and often causes chronic diseases. Large number of polyhedral inclusion bodies (PIB)which contained numerous virus particles were found in the midgut epithelial cells of infected insects. Infected cells mortality. Infected insects were smaller than normal and spent longer periods as immatures, and thus may face unfavourable competition for survival in nature. Stress factors such as different levels of plant resistance and bacterial contaminants enhanced the adverse effects of CPV resulting in increased insect mortality.
