: In this paper the author points to numerous regulations that constitute Republic of Serbialegislation related to food safety. Firstly, he presents the historical overview of healthinspection and,among a number of laws that govern this matter in the Republic of Serbia, he chooses to analyzethe most significant ones: Law on safety of food, food products and the products of general use, Lawon health inspection and Law on public protection from infectious diseases. These laws regulate therights andmandate of health inspectors, as well as the requirements and qualifications for the jobof a health inspector. For the purpose of the protection of lives and health of the Republic of Serbiapopulation, the above mentioned laws foresee the penalty provisions, that is fines for natural andlegal persons, organizations and associations which do not comply with health inspectors’ decisions
