Chemical – physical characteristics of Andosols as an important attribute of their evaluation in conditions of Slovakia

Andosols are situated on neovolcanic mountains of neogene period with dominance of vitric components. Their area is 2 447 ha in Slovakia and with similar soils (e.g. Andic Cambisols) is together 6 791 ha, what is 0.14% of soil cover in Slovakia. The prevalent part of Andosols is situated under forest mostly on depressions (over 500 m over sea), particularly on the convexed forms (e.g. upper part of Sitno hill). Andosols and their chemical and physical characteristics have been studied on three soil profiles under neovolcanic mountainous conditions (Poľana, Štiavnické vrchy and Kremnické vrchy mountains). Important chemical (pH, Corg., Nt, Feo, Fed, Ald, P, K and their fractional composition) and physical properties (mechanical composition, bulk density) have been studied and evaluated in this contribution. On the basis of obtained results it was found out that Andosols in conditions of Slovakia are humous (content of Corg. > 6%) and deep soils, acid to strongly acid (pH/KCl < 5) with low content of available phosphorus and potassium and low bulk density (< 0.9 g·cm–3).
