Morphological and physiological responses to drought stress of stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) seedlings

In this study, the effect of drought stress on morphological and physiological characteristics of Pinus pinea L. seedlings were examined. For this purpose; four different irrigation processes (control, 7 day, 14 day and 21 day) weere applied on containerized Pinus pinea seedlings in the first growth season; from mid-July to early November. Before each irrigation period; predawn xylem water potential of seedlings were measured and then the seedlings were irrigation in the field capacity. At the end of experiment, morphological (seedling height, root collar diameter, root and stem dry weight, root percentage etc.) and physiological (water potential and components, proline content and total soluble sugar content) characteristic were determined.Consequently, drought stress was effected on morphological and physiological characteristics. Increasing drought stress decreased of seedling height, root collar diameter, root, stem and needle dry weight, lateral branch number, root percentage, but shoot-to-root ratio and diameter- to-height ratio were high. In the drought-stressed seedlings, the predawn water potentials and total soluble sugar contents were significantly lower, and the proline content were significantly higher than in the control seedlings. The incerased the proline content and the decrease in osmotic potential at full turgor and at the point of turgor loss the drought-stressed seedlings indicated osmotic adjustment in the Pinus pinea seedlings.
