Current status of diseases and pesticide use in tomato: a key source of income of farmers of Uttarakhand

Diseases are major problems of tomato cultivation and responsible for reducing the yield, increasing the production cost and having direct impact to the farmers and society. Late blight, early blight, leaf curl, stem rot and wilt were observed as major diseases of tomato growing areas having average loss from 20 to 80 per cent. Study on present status of disease occurrence on tomato crop and farmer’s practices pertaining to disease management reveals the dependence of farmers solely on chemical use as the number of pesticide application varied in the range of 10-40. However, disease management varied from 5-60% depending on the chemical use by the farmers. Huge investment on pesticides is due to improper diagnosis of the problems basically reliant on local pesticide dealers. Sometimes the label expiry, adulteration and under dosage etc. have also been forced to increase both the dosage and number of pesticide application.
