Evaluation of moth bean genotypes for their resistance to powdery mildew disease caused by Erysiphe polygoni DC

Moth bean (Vigna aconitifolia (Jaq.) Marechal) is characterized as one of the most drought hardy, short duration, annual legume crop. It is mainly grown in northern districts of Karnataka. Moth bean crop suffers from many diseases viz., Yellow mosaic, bacterial blight, root rot, anthracnose and powdery mildew. Powdery mildew is the most serious disease of moth bean as it adversely affects the crop during rabi season. Evaluation of moth bean germplasm lines against powdery mildew disease under field conditions showed that out of 70 moth bean germplasm lines screened during 2018-19, none were found immune, highly resistant and resistant to the disease. One germplasm line viz., 20KR-9 recorded moderately resistant reaction. Eight germplasm lines were moderately susceptible and remaining 61 germplasm lines showed highly susceptible reaction. Among 168 moth bean genotypes screened during 2019-20, none of the genotypes showed immune, highly resistant and resistant reaction. Five genotypes (IC-35985, IC-39634, IC-39829, IC-39835 and IC-103154) showed moderately resistant reaction whereas 39 genotypes were found to be moderately susceptible and remaining 124 genotypes were found to be highly susceptible.
