Some epidemiological aspects of white rot of pea

Growth and sclerotial formation of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum occurred within the temperature range 10 to 25deg C, the optimum being at 20 to 25degree C. A temperature range of 15 to 20degree C, however, was found to be the most favourable for number and dry weight ofsclerotia whereas, size of sclerotia was maximum at 5degree C and progressively decreased with the increase in temperature. One to 2 months of preconditioning showed increased myceliogenic and carpogenic germination. Ascospores started germinating within 4 h at a temperature range of 5 to 25degree C (optimum 20degree C). Spore germination increased with increase in incubation period even at sub-optimum temperatures of 12degree C. As leaf wetness of pea (cv. Lincoln) increased, infection efficiency of S. sclerotiorum increased. Sclerotia of S. sclerotiorum were found to survive more than a year in soil. Sclerotial germination and decomposition decreased with increasing soil depth under wet humid conditions whereas the reverse occurred in snow bound areas in Himachal Pradesh, India.
