Variability in Tilletia indica, the incitant of Karnal bunt of wheat
2002
S.S. CHAHAL, P.P.S. PANNU and
Nine isolates of Tilletia indica from different locations of northern India were evaluated for morphological, physiological and pathogenic variations. The isolates differed from each other in respect of percentage teliospore germination and production of primary and secondary sporidia. A positive correlation was found between secondary spordial production and disease incidence. The isolates which produced a higher average number of secondary sporidia were comparatively more virulent. The isolates were divided into six groups based on their pathogenic behaviour on one triticale and ten wheat varieties. Data are tabulated on the responses of the wheat varieties to the nine isolates.
