In-plane bending strength properties of sugi CLT

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels consist of several layers of lumber stacked crosswise and glued together on their faces. In-plane bending strength properties of 5-layer 5-ply and 7-layer 7-ply CLT panels made of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) lumber were measured. The results were as follows: (1) Layers loaded parallel to the grain were mainly effective in the in-plane bending strength properties of CLT panels, and in-plane bending strength properties of CLT panels can be estimated from the strength properties of lumber and number of layers loaded parallel to the grain. (2) In-plane bending modulus of elasticity of sugi CLT panels can be measured by the dynamic testing. (3) Most of CLT panels tended to be broken near a load point, and finger joint of lumber played a significant role in the failure of specimens.
