This is of very great importance as some of the practical results, which we have discussed, may not stand the test of their sapplication to the general condition, considering the present size of the holdings and the social background. It is understood that strip cropping will be possible in the Dry Farming areas as generally the size of the holding is sufficiently large. The cultivator can, there-fore, take advantage of growing erosion resistant crops, such as, oil seeds etc. along with the erosion permitting food crops thus obtaining both food and money as well. I am afraid this would not be, however, the case in the heavy rainfall areas where, in fact, the problem of erosion is also of the utmost importance. The holdings, how-ever, are extremely small — minimum size being from 10 to 50 cents — and under these conditions the cultivator cannot think of growing any other but his staple food crop required for his sustenance. I have come across such areas in Travancore-Cochin State where either tapioca or paddy is being grown and although the cultivator might well realize the value of avoiding erosion by growing proper types of crops he has after all to think first of getting food to avoid starvation. The peasant economy in India is, as it is well-known, a marginal economy and such advice about saving his land for future generations would hardly appeal to him. It would be thus essential to work out proper cultural practices for such areas with a view to avoid loss of fertility by erosion.
