Effect of Organic Manures on the Uptake of Nirogen and Phosphorus by Barley

The value of organic matter and excreata of animals are important in improving the productivity of soil and was recognised from the dawn of human history. Green manuring was recommended by the author Pliny (23-79 AD.). The addition of organic matter to the soil also invariably leads to the conservation of nitrogen.Lipman and Blair (1913) obtained more crop yield with cow manure than with 320 lbs. of nitrate or soda per acre. Clark and Roller (1931) recommended the use of organic manures.Coleland and Merkle (1942) and Behr (1939) observed the effects of manures on the uptake of phosphorus by plants. Sen and Bains (1955) used phosphorus in combination with farm yard manure and found marked increase in available phosphorus over control.Under the present study the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus in the form of organic manures have been studied on the growth, dry weight and uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus by barley plants. The nitrogen and phosphorus were applied in the form of farm yard manure, sewage sludge, compost and dhaincha, but in control nitrogen and phosphorus were applied in the form of inorganic fertilizers.
