Analytical Concepts of Contour Bunding Design

Before we can formulate the design cone cepts, it is necessary to state clearly the func- tions expected to be performed by contour bunding. On these functions, will rest the further development of the problem. 1. It is presumed that sound thinking has gone into the choice of the practice, and it is required to create a series of shallow 'storage basins' on the sloping land by means of bunds on the contour or at least across the slope, so as to improve the moisture regime of the fields, for optimum crop growth. 2. It is further given that the maximum rainfall amount falling in a day less infiltration is to be stored without spilling. 3. Spacing is further required to be fixed so as not to have any sheet erosion. Keeping the above essential requirements in view, we examine as to how high should the bund be on a given slope so as to create a storage basin to hold the rainfall less infiltration expected. The above conditions are somewhat simplified and idealised, in order to facilitate analysis.
