Isolation of cellulolytic enzyme producer from kenaf stem and an evaluation of kenaf bioretting process

Kenaf is known as a plant species derived from the bark of Hibiscus Cannabinus L. and it has two types of fibres; the outer bark or bast portion (40% of the plant) and the inner woody core material (60%). In this study, four strains isolated from kenaf stem were examined for their ability to produce cellulolytic enzyme that commonly used in bioretting. Bioretting is a process of separating the bast from kenaf core. In this process, non-cellulosic substances are removed in order to produce textile quality bast fibres. A gram-negative strain had shown the positive result for the enzyme production. Different types of enzymes (Ban, Promozyme and Pectinex Ultra SP-L) were also investigated and compared for their performance in bioretting process at room temperature. The enzyme retted fibres were tested for tensile strength and the average tensile strength of 262.58 MPa was obtained.
