Effects of Bacillus sphaericus (UPMB 10) inoculation on the nodulation and seed protein content of four-angled bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus)

Nodule formation and nitrogen (N) fixation in legumes is a result of a specificsymbiotic interaction between Rhizobium and leguminous plants. Bacillus sphaericus (UPMB 10) is freeliving non-symbiotic plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) that fixed atmospheric N in association with plants. The useof B. sphaericus as inoculum from the plant Psophocarpus tetragonolobus was conducted to investigate the nodulation response and how seed protein content is affected by B. sphaericus which is not a rhizobia. A greenhouse experiment was conducted with three treatments and five replications each. The three treatments consisted of sterilized top soil (T1), un-sterilized top soil (T2) and top soil inoculated with B. sphaericus (T3). The result showed that P. tetragonolobus treated with B. sphaericus (T3) significantly increased the N and protein concentration in the seed and number of pods. It was observed that B. sphaericus have positive interaction with other microbes in the soil. The overall result showed that P. tetragonolobus that have been inoculated with B. sphaericus preformed better than those without inoculation, hence B. sphaericus can be a beneficial microbe to the legume.
