Biogeography and landscape of Elaeis oleifera (HBK) cortes in Caribbean and Andean regions of Colombia, for ex situ conservation and sustainable use of genetic resource

In Colombia, Elaeis oleifera is important to produce the interspecific hybrid between E. oleifera x E. guineensis, that is the current genetic strategy to counter the phytosanitary risk of Bud Rot (BR) disease. The species E. oleifera is in danger of extinction due to the loss of habitat. The objective of this project was to know the biogeography of the natural distribution areas of E.oleifera to get elements to set up and manage an ex situ germplasm collection. A prospection of E. oleifera was carried out in 12 departments and 37 municipalities. In total, 68 polygons (areas for sampling) were established, with 2 kilometers of diameter around each georeferenced point. The predominant landscapes were the alluvial and lacustrine plains, alluvial valleys, swamps and marshes. Most of the soils were characterized as moderate to high fertility and good drainage. It was observed that the warm semi-arid climate predominates, followed by warm semi-humid and hot humid. A high degree of intervention was observed in the wild niches associated to agro-pastoral activities.
