In 2018, the University of Novi Sad appeared for the first time on the global Shanghai list, and it was alsoranked by area, so that in the field of veterinary medicine it was among the top 300 in the world. Each rankingsystem uses a sizable number of indicators, and their number varies from 4 to 30. When it comes to theShanghai list, in each field, the following four indicators are examined: the total number of internationalpapers, the number of papers in the highest quality journals, the number of quotations and internationalcooperation. The analysis showed that there is a positive correlation between the number of published papersand the number of citations, as well as the Hirsch index. However, when it comes to Serbia in the veterinaryfield, it is much better positioned in terms of the number of published papers than their citation. The scientificresearch and teaching process is closely linked. Universities and higher education institutions have thefunction to transfer existing and create new knowledge. New knowledge is gained when we follow scientificresearch rules in a methodological sense. Veterinary medicine is a regulated profession, which means that thelearning outcomes and skills that students must possess on the day of graduation are precisely defined - firstday competences. The scientific-research approach is necessary because it is the adoption of scientificmodels of thinking and work in the basis of achieving first day skills that are prescribed by international qualitystandards in higher veterinary education (as prescribed by EAEVE). This is achieved by applying theprinciples of medicine based on facts: 1) examination of patient/problem; 2) Asking the questions mostrelevant to the case (PICO / CAPO system); 3) Determine the most adequate sources to be used inindependent research work to support the case; 4) Use of scientific and professional sources of information; 5)Restoring case-integration of information from independent research; 6) Self-evaluation - writing quality notesabout the patient and evaluating their own results in practice. Universities whose teaching standards are ratedhigh according to EAEVE standards are high and on the Shanghai list, which confirms the connectionbetween teaching, science and practice.
