Soil Nitrogen Supply and Sugar Beet Fertilization Needs

In the Czech beet-growing region, 90 experiments with nitrogen fertilization were carried out between 2001 and 2019. In late February/early March, before the experiments were set, the mineral nitrogen supply in soil was established in soil layers 0–30, 30–60 and 60–90 cm. The experiments determined the dose of nitrogen needed for the maximum yield of polarized sugar. The average dose for all experiments was 60 kg/ha N, but in individual cases it was in the range 0–160 kg/ha N and in 15% of cases, the maximum yield was achieved with zero nitrogen dose. The nitrogen dose for maximum sugar yield depended highly significantly on the mineral nitrogen content in soil. For a practical prediction of optimum nitrogen dose, the following relationship is recommended: N optimum dose (kg/ha) = 160–0.8 × nitrogen content in soil layer 0–90 cm.
