The aim of this study was to test NO3- content of petioles wet tissue by means of reflectometric determination (Reflectoquant®) with regard to different nitrogen fertilization and plant population. The Serenade KWS variety was sown on March 18th, 2014 in three plant populations: 140,000; 100,000 and 60,000 plants/ha. Spring nitrogen fertilization was applied as follows: 0 - control, 45 kg/ha (pre sowing) and 99 kg/ha (pre sowing with topdressing in mid-May). The fresh leaves petioles were collected manually in 6 terms from the end of May to September (73, 94, 114, 134, 155 and 176 days after sowing). On June 20th (94 days after sowing) the highest NO3- concentration in petiole wet tissue was determined at 60,000 plants/ha (1,594.17 mg/kg) which was about 30% higher as compared to 140,000 plants/ha. Furthermore, at the same date, petioles at the highest nitrogen rate had 1,709.17 mg/kg NO3- in petiole wet tissue, which was about 40% higher as compared to control. This method can be adapted for sugar beet petioles analysis as fast and easy method to test and monitor the NO3- content of the crop and growth stage.
