Gradation of Common Vole (Microtus arvalis) in 2019 in Sugar Beet Production Areas and Its Importance in Terms of Damage to Sugar Beet Production

The dynamics of the common vole (Microtus arvalis) in 2019 was presented; during this year, an unusual population growth occurred in the areas of sugar beet growing. The data obtained from the state administration monitoring program were used for the evaluation of the potential impact of population gradation on the production of sugar beet. Altogether twelve sugar beet regions were evaluated at the level of regions and selected districts suitable for sugar beet cultivation. The results showed that the most vulnerable districts were located in Moravia (districts: Zlínský, Olomoucký, Jihomoravský) which is probably related to the character of the landscape in relation to agricultural land use. Sugar beet areas in Bohemia showed lower population densities of voles and less damage can thus be expected. In areas where the population increase was not so significant, it is possible to assume an increase in vole population density the following year if the population is still in the process of reproduction. For a timely damage prevention, monitoring of rodent density is necessary and if harmful population density is detected during the spring period (more than 50 active burrows/ha), the population should be regulated by the recommended methods. By using this example of vole gradation, it can be expected that in case of future outbreaks, the sugar beet areas in Moravia will be the most affected.
