Issues and global trends in antibiotic use for food producing animals

Antibiotics have been used in farm animals for almost half a century to treat and control diseases and to improve production efficiency. The use of antibiotic is an important tool in animal production and health management because it helps maintain the health and welfare of the animals. However, in recent years, questions have arisen regarding the use of antibiotics in food animal agriculture from food safety perspective; specifically, bacterial resistance and drug residue are the two major concerns relative to the use of antibiotics in food animals. The concern about Antibiotics Resistance is that antibiotics used in food animals may select for antibiotic resistant foodborne bacteria that cannot be treated by the same types of antibiotics when they cause disease in humans. This issue has been discussed widely over the last decade, and a science-based approach, Risk Analysis, has been suggested by major international organisations to address this issue. This paper will introduce the concept and the framework of Risk Analysis for the resistance concern. This paper will also discuss the development of Animal Drug Residue issue, the establishment of Maximum Residue Limits (MRL), and the methods adopted by some major countries to address the residue issue.
