Babesiosis is a parasitic disease spread worldwide caused by tick-borne protozoa of the genus Babesia, which in the body of a susceptible and infested host multiply in erythrocytes. Dog babesiosis is caused byBabesia canis and Babesia gibsoni species, with B. canis being divided into three subspecies. In dogs withbabesiosis, thrombocytopenia and anemia are the primary hematologic abnormalities. Whatever the caseof babesia, the pathogenesis of the disease is the same, manifested by a clinical picture that includesanemia (due to the immune response of destruction of erythrocytes), fever, apathy, dehydration, impairedappetite, enlargement of lymph nodes, hemoglobinuria, in severe cases jaundice and mucous membranes, orange content in rectum. Babesiosis is accompanied by multisystem disorders of acute respiratorysyndrome, cerebral signs, but also acute renal impairment. Leukocyte abnormalities range fromleukocytosis (with and without left turning) to leukopenia, neutrophilia, neutropenia, lymphocytosis and /or eosinophilia. The prevalence of acute renal failure in this disease is 2.2-36%. When controlling kidneyfunction, it is necessary to examine serum levels of urea, creatinine, as well as their relationship, proteinsin the urine, the extent of glomerular filtration, the specific gravity of the urine and the nature of thesediment. erythrocytes, extensive gastrointestinal bleeding, increased protein intake, catabolic processesthat are dominant in inflammatory conditions (including babesiosis), followed by protein destruction andconsequent increase in blood urea. In doing so, the urea ratio: creatinine changes significantly in favor of urea, and a change in this ratio has been observed in canine babesiosis. The assessment of babesiosisshould take into account a larger number of laboratory parameters and should not be based solely on thefindings of babesia in blood smear, due to possible complications and the use of supportive therapy.
