Horses as sentinel animals for the efficient west nile virus surveillance
2022
Medić, Strahinja | Lupulović, Diana
The surveillance of the prevalence for WNV virus in horse population can be used as the sentinel model for viral circulation in human population of the same geographic area. The available data on seroprevalence in horses are showing the overlapping in the intensity of this mosquito- borne disease with clinical cases in humans. Misinterpretation of clinical signs in horses affected by WNV could be one of the reasons for low number of the documented clinical cases in horses. Therefore, the number of horses tested on the presence of IgM and IgG antibodies should be increased, as well as the awareness of WNV virus circulation in the horse population to take advantage of this sentinel model to assess WNV circulation
