Serological studies on BHV-1 and BVDV infections in cattles in private family enterprises of Diyarbakir province

In this project, bovineherpes virüs type 1(BHV-1) andbovine viral diarrhea virüs (BVDV), which pose a risk against dairy farming and stock breeding industry have been investigated in small scale family enterprises in Diyarbakır Province of Eastern Anatolia Region, Turkey as serologically.BHV-1 and BVDVlead to latentandpersistentinfections in cattle those that are accepted as common route for both infections in herds, respectively.Both viruses also causes respiratoric and neurological symptoms, the decrease of milk and meat production, abortions, congenital defects, stillbirth and infertility problems by the way of multi-systemic infections.Material and Method: 281 blood samples from cattle were collected from randomlyselected 8 enterprises in Diyarbakır province.All serum samples were screened using Serum Neutralisation Test (SNT) in order to detect neutralizing antibodies against BHV-1 and BVDV.Results: 44 of 281 (%15.65) of cattle were BVDV seropositive whilst69 of 281 (24.55%) were detected as BHV-1 seropositive. In addition 16 of 281 (5.69%) of cattle was carrying neutralising antibodies against both viruses.Futhermore 39.39% (26/66), 21,21%(16/66) and 10.60% (7/66) were found BHV-1, BVDV and both viruseswere seropositive, respectively.Conclusion:Accordingtoresult of thisresearch, BHV-1 and BVDV seropositivity rates detected in Diyarbakır province are similiar to previous studiesthat carried out other provinces of Turkey and can be accepted as high for small sized enterprises. We recommend that a strong control and eradication program should be developed in Turkey.
