The effects of melatonin applications on bean seedling development under moderately alkaline soil conditions
2020
Yakupoglu, Gokcen
In this research, the effect of melatonin (MEL) applications on bean seeds to tolerance of light alkaline soils were investigated. For this purpose, seeds were treated with melatonin (0, 1, 5 or 25 µM) during 24 h. Seeds were sown at 3:1 ratio of peat: perlite mixture (control) and soil that pH 7.94. Seedling length, fresh weight, stem diameter, leaf area, chlorophyll content (SPAD), anthocyanin, proline, MDA, H₂O₂ and electrical conductivity values were measured in bean seedlings. Treatment with 1 µM MEL at the seed stage alleviated the harmful effects of alkaline stress and caused significant improvement in seedling length, fresh weight, chlorophyll content (SPAD), proline, MDA and H₂O₂ content. The best results of stem diameter and leaf area were measured from 25 μM MEL application. The 1 µM MEL application to bean seeds in alkaline soil conditions might be a suggestion for decreasing the stress and damage products.
