Artificial Ground Water Recharge Through Surface Drainage System-A Case Study

Intensive agriculture in the state of Punjab has resulted into over exploitation Of ground water resources leading to decline in water table. One of the possibilities to arrest the declining water table is the artificial ground water recharge. A large drainage network was constructed in early sixties to control the flood and waterlogging in the area presently suffering from declining water table which used to be waterlogged during that period. These drains offer a good scope for artificial ground water recharge. Good quality water which is presently 1-unolf through drains during storm or water, which has to be escaped from canals during canals flow/irrigation demand mismatches offer possible source of recharge water through the drainage system. Therefore, a field study was taken up examine the feasibility of artificial groundwater recharge through surface drainage system. The recharge capacity of the drain was computed using the results of ponding test. The added advantage of providing sequence of pools by construction checks across the drain at suitable intervals and recharge shafts under specific geohydrological conditions to enhance the ground water recharge was examined. The studies have revealed that recharged through surface drainage system along with enhancement of recharge through creating sequence of pools and provision of recharge shafts under specific geohydrological conditions are technically feasible and economically viable.
