The glutathione content in pig blood

Whole blood and erythrocytes from a total of 207 pigs were analyzed for its content of reduced glutathione (GSH). Whole blood GSH is stable up to one week at 4 deg. C. In 6 months old pigs a mean GSH content in whole blood and erythrocytes was found to be 29.2 +/- 4.1 mg per cent and 2.03 +/- 1.34 mg/g hemoglobin, respectively. Pig blood GSH is influenced by both age and genetics, whereas no sex difference was observed. In the period from birth to 8-10 weeks of age the bllod GSH content varies distinctly and in accordance with changes in the hematological status. In older pigs a gradual increase in the GSH content was found. The fact that the variation in the GSH content is considerably less within than between litters strongly indicate that pig blood GSH is subjected to genetical control. Because the GSH level is genetically controlled the possibility exists that a relationship to some production traits in pigs might be present. Such investigations in pigs are emphasized by earlier findings of an association between the blood GSH level and traits like growth, fertility and mortality in other animal species.
