Ground water potential and its use in maximising crop production, 1: Naogaon and Badalgachhi thanas [of Bangladesh]

An experiment was made to determine the ground water potential of two thanas namely Naogaon and Badalgachhi of Rajshahi district in Bangladesh to increase the cropped area for higher production and probable modification of existing cropping pattern for improvement based on soil, environment and ground water resources. Rice is the major crop of the area followed by some minor crops under non-irrigated condition; wheat, potato, and winter vegetables under irrigated conditions. 42 test borings were made in the study area. Each of the test boring was made up to a depth of 150' from the surface. Soil samples were collected at an interval of 10' and analysed for particle size. Pump test were performed to study the aquifer characteristics for determining whether deep tubewell could be suitable. Ground water potential of these thanas was estimated to be 100,799 acre-ft. out of which 25449 acre - ft. was being lifted and 75350 acre-ft available for irrigation. Based on water requirement of individual crops adopted to the area, eight alternative cropping patterns have been suggested. These patterns would intensify cropping for more than 200 percent with production about three times of the present production.
