Tilapia: taxonomy and speciation [in Africa]
1982
Trewavas, E.
The tilapias are grouped into two genera, Tilapia and Sarotherodon, characterized by both their feeding and their reproductive habits and structures. There is some overlap in feeding habits, some species of both genera feeding on detritus and periphyton, but substrate-spawning and mouth brooding respectively characterize the two genera. The mouth brooding of the species of Sarotherodon is of two main types, biparental or parental, sub genus Sarotherodon and maternal brooding with mating of a lek pattern in the rest. The maternal mouth brooders have been divided into several (5 to 7) sub-genera: Oreochromis, Danakilia, Alcolapia, Nyasalapia and Neotilapia are recognized. Speciation, both allopatric and sympatric, of sub genus Sarotherodon has taken place in west Africa, and of the other sub genera mostly in east and central Africa
