Site characterization needs; weather, hydrology, soil [study conducted at IRRI, Philippines]
1982
Brinkman, R. | Mamaril, C.P. | Oldeman, R.
Site information is needed to explain differences in yield and in response rates to fertilizers or other management inputs, both from place to place and between years or seasons. This knowledge can be used not only to refine management at the sites studied but more important, to improve returns from farmers' efforts on similar land. Because of the influences of Weather, hydrology and soil characteristics on the rice crop or on rice-based cropping systems do not operate singly but are interconnected, data on these aspects of the environment should be recorded and interpreted in a coherent way rather than collected and studied separately. This work, with improvements, should continue and could usefully be extended to other networks as well as to individual sites where experiments are carried out
