Biology of rice green hairy caterpillar Rivula atimeta (Swinhoe) (Philippines)

The larva feeds on graminaceous plants and severely defoliates rice plants. The incubation period ranged from 3-4 days. The larva passed through 5 instars. The actual larval period ranged from 15-20 days with an average of 18 days. The pupal period ranged from 5-8 days with an average of 6 days, and the total developmental period (egg laying adult emergence) was 28-30 days. The total number of eggs laid per female ranged from 47 to 227. The female moth oviposited as many as 101 eggs per day. Three hymenoptera parasites were reared from the larvae and pupae of Rivula atimeta. They have four peak periods of abundance: April, August, September and October
