[Two hundred years of Thai fisheries in the Rattanakosin Era]

Even though the fisheries has a long history in Thailand, this paper will cover only the fisheries in the two hundred years of the Rattanakosin Era. Records indicated that during the first century of the Rattanakosin, fish were plentiful in Thai waters. People caught fish as a routine for household consumption. Trading of fish and fishery products seldom occurred in those days. The declining abundance of fish in natural waters was observed in 1920s. Investigation was thoroughly conducted by Dr. H.M. Smith, a fishery adviser to the Thai Government in 1923-25. He presented a report and recommendations to the Government in 1925. A year later, the Thai Government established the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture in 1926. The newly created Department's first responsibility was to protect and conserve the fishery resources and to promote aquaculture in the country. The first fishery station was established in 1927 at Bung Boraped, Nakon Sawan province. The growth of Thai fisheries at the beginning was slow, and completely ceased during World War II. The development was resumed again after the war in the 1950s. The Chinese purse seine was introduced in Thailand in 1950 by the Chinese fishermen. It became popular among the Thai fishermen due to its high efficiency A program on aquacultural development was first lanuched in 1954. The success of the Thai fishery development occurred following the introduction of otter-board trawling and the venture into new fishing grounds in late 1960's and early 1970's
