Effect of photoperiod on the growth and yield of different cotton (Gossypium spp.) varieties [study conducted in the Philippines]

The objectives of the study were: 1) to determine the age of cotton seedling that is most sensitive to day lengths, 2) to evaluate the effects of photoperiod on the growth, yield and yield components, as well as total dry matter content of cotton, and 3) to compare the overall response of the different cotton varieties to different photoperiods. Results of the experiment show that the twenty-day old seedlings subjected to photoperiod were the most sensitive to day lengths. The 10-hour photoperiod treatment produced the tallest plants and had the most branches compared to the 12- and 14-hour photoperiod treatments. This also produced the highest seed cotton yield, highest number of bolls per plant, highest percentage of bolls retained and highest total dry matter content. Deltapine 16 (Australian) was the earliest to produce squares and flowers after emergence
