Topographical delimitation of Neodiprion sertifer (Hym., Diprionidae) outbreaks on Scots pine in relation to needle quality

allemand. The distribution of outbreaks of Neodiprion sertifer on Scots pine along a mountain slope was analysed. The degree of damage increased with altitude. In rearing experiments larvae grew best on trees with high nitrogen content and the nitrogen content of trees increased with increasing altitude. In prinicpal component analysis the contrast of nitrogen and dry matter content of needles best explained the degree of damage. It was suggested that trees at upper slope are growing in stressful conditions which decrease their resistance against herbivores
