Breeding wheat for high grain yield and early maturity [Bangladesh]

The wheat Breeding Project of Bangladesh Agricultural University collected wheat germplasm from local and foreign sources. The number of genotypes collected so far was 200 of which 100 was discarded due to their poor adaptability. Eighty four of these genotypes were classified into different groups of maturity, height, yield and grain protein content. Earliness in maturity was observed in 50 genotypes and medium lateness in 34 genotypes. Crosses were made in different years to develop segregating populations for selection of high yielding lines having early maturity and short plant height. Selected lines were in F(6) (set 1), and1010 F(5) (set II) generations. Twenty five lines of different generations gave higher yield than check (3-51%).
