Yield of corn for grain and silage under intensive cultivation

The cultural conditions essential for achievement of maximum yield of corn for grain and silage were evaluated at the Newe Ya'ar Experiment Station in 1984 and 1985. Maximum grain yield was higher than 15,000 kg/ha. Nitrogen fertilization of more than 275 kg/ha did not increase the grain yield in these plots, which were also fertilized with cow manure. Grain yield of var. P3323 did not differ significantly with irrigation frequencies of 1, 3 and 6 days, whereas the yield of hybrid JX180 decreased at an irrigation frequency of 1 or 6 days. Significant regression coefficients were found between N accumulation in the ears, and total dry matter in the ears or entire plant, and between N accumulation in the entire plant and total dry matter in the ears or entire plant. The hybrid P3323, which outyielded JX180, also accumulated more total nitrogen. Significant regression coefficients were also found between yield of total dry matter and of dry matter of ears. Maximum grain and total dry matter yield were achieved at 74,000 - 78,000 pl/ha. A gre1027ater population density did not increase yield at any rate of N fertilization. Remobilization of N from the lower leaves was observed during ear development, mainly at high population density with low N fertilization, as indicated by typical yellowing symptoms of the lower leaves. Remobilization of N to the ears did not reduce total dry matter yield. Grain yield was similar at 75 and 96 cm spacing between the rows, at all fertilization levels.
