Whereas botanical aspects of field-balks are rather well studied, entomological investigations are largely missing up to now. Well developed balks can act as bridges between isolated biotopes, can serve as a habitat of endangered animal and plant species and can guarantee the nutrition of various beneficial insects. The diversity of species is increasing with the width of the balks. In balks of more than 2-3 m an extensive insect life can be found.
